Art and utility combine in Quilts and Wall Hangings 2003, which will open Friday in the Great Hall and the Art Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The crowd-pleasing annual juried exhibition features 58 exquisite quilts and wall hangings representing the talents of West Virginia quilters. Quiltmaking is one of West Virginia’s oldest and most treasured art forms, and this annual display has become a tradition with visitors from all over the United States and abroad. The exhibition will remain on display through Sept. 1.
Prizes were awarded in four categories: pieced quilts, appliqued quilts, mixed/other quilts, and wall hangings. A complete list of exhibitors and winners is attached.
Priscilla Godfrey of Philomont, Va., was the judge for this year’s exhibition. Editor of the National Quilting Association’s (NQA) Certified Quilt Judges Quarterly, Godfrey also has been chairman of the NQA Judges Certification Program and served as moderator of the group’s annual retreat. Her quilts have been exhibited in NQA shows around the country, and in 1995, her quilt collection was featured in the galleries of the organization’s headquarters in Ellicott City, Md.
Quilts and Wall Hangings 2003 will be on display during the 27th annual Vandalia Gathering festival, which will be held May 23-25 at the Cultural Center and on the State Capitol grounds. The exhibition awards will be presented to the winning quiltmakers in a ceremony preceding the Vandalia Gathering concert in the West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 24.
The Cultural Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The Archives Library is closed on Sunday. For more information about Quilts and Wall Hangings 2003, call (304) 558-0162.
