John Fluharty: Photography exhibit currently on display at the Cultural Center

The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History has opened a new exhibition, John Fluharty: Photography, in the Balcony Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The show will remain on display through Oct. 29.

The exhibit consists of 10 photographs taken while Fluharty was traveling in Tibet and Egypt. The pictures are in black-and-white and color, and capture such images as Tibetan monks practicing philosophical argument in a monastery in Lhasa, a Tibetan boy standing by the remains of his temple destroyed during the Chinese cultural revolution, a butcher in Cairo, a camel at Giza and Children at the Tibetan School for the Blind.

Fluharty says of his work, “I always look for interaction between a subject and their environment. I aim not to show the people and places, but the relationship between the person and the environment, the daily life that we so often overlook.”

A native Charlestonian, Fluharty is currently attending St Andrews University in Scotland where he hopes to graduate next year with an Honors M.A. in philosophy. He has been taking photographs for six years and produced free-lance photography for the Charleston Gazette and West Virginia Executive Magazine. He also has contributed work to a number of exhibitions in the Charleston area. In 2005, Fluharty helped set up West Virginia’s branch of the Heart Gallery, a nationwide project to aid in the adoption of older children. The work was exhibited at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences as well as Union Station in Washington, D.C.

Fluharty holds an executive position as photography editor and chief photographer for the St Andrews independent newspaper, The Saint, and was recently short-listed in the Scottish Herald Student Press Awards for his photographs that were published in The Saint.
