Entries solicited for biennial juried art exhibition at the Cultural Center

3/26/03

The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History is pleased to announce a call for entries for the West Virginia Juried Exhibition 2003. The biennial exhibition showcases works by West Virginia artists in the areas of painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, mixed media and crafts. The show will be on display at the Cultural Center in the State Capitol Complex Oct. 18, 2003, through Feb. 1, 2004.

Eighteen awards totaling $33,000 will be presented at the exhibition opening on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in the West Virginia State Theater of the Cultural Center. One of the largest endowments for any single juried art exhibition in the country, the award money is made available by the Division’s West Virginia Commission on the Arts through an appropriation from the West Virginia Legislature.

The pieces selected for the show, including the award winners, will be chosen by jurors James Adkins, director of visual arts and gallery director at Howard Community College in Columbia, Md., and Tom Spleth, former curator of the City Gallery of Contemporary Art in Raleigh, N.C., and current full-time working artist in Penland, N.C.

The first round of jurying for the exhibition is done by slides. Slides will be accepted from May 5 through June 16 and must be accompanied by an official entry form. For more information or to request an exhibition prospectus, artists may call (304) 558-0220, ext. 128. Information also is available on the Division’s website at www.wvculture.org.

The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, an agency of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, brings together the state’s past, present and future through programs and services in the areas of archives and history, the arts, historic preservation and museums.
