Presidential Hopefuls, Aides to Visit Lewis
May 5, 1960
The presidential candidates, as the warm weather, come late into Lewis County.
But by Saturday afternoon Senator Hubert Humphrey will be here wooing the Lewis county vote while on the same afternoon Franklin D. Roosevelt, jr., will be the John Alden for his man, Senator John Kennedy.
Senator Hubert Humphrey will open the double-header with an appearance at the county courthouse between 2:15 and 4 p.m. He will be followed at 4 p.m. by the son of the former president. There was some speculation this week that Senator Kennedy would also be here Saturday afternoon. He is scheduled to be at an open house at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Stonewall Jackson hotel in Clarksburg.
Lewis county, neither distressed nor a metropolitan area, has had the presidential candidates skirting it for several weeks. Last Friday one of aides to Humphrey, Karl Rolvaag, Lt. Governor of Minnesota, made a visit here. He was a guest at a luncheon at the Camden hotel.
Rolvaag discussed the qualifications of his man in a short talk after lunch. He pointed out, too, that Minnesota had its economic problems, especially in the iron pits. . . .
