Head Quarters 4th Va Inf
Near Strasburg Va
Aug 16/64
Gov. Boreman,
Sir,
By the retreat of Gen Sigel from Martinsburg WVa last month - my trunk in common with a great amount of officers' baggage was lost or destroyed and the Commission which I had the honor to receive as Chaplain from your predecessor, Gov Pierrepoint was destroyed.

I would be greatly obliged to you if you would cause to be transmitted to me from the proper office a duplicate of said commission on parchment. It was given at Wheeling in the latter part of the month of Nov 1861 to rank from Nov 1st, 1861.

I had the honor to send to you by Mr. Hornbrook a rebel flag captured by Serg. Boley of the 4th Va Inf at Staunton- to be preserved among the relics & trophies of the war at the Capitol.

I am Sir
Your Obedient Servant
Geo L Woodhull

Adj. Gen. West Va
Sir,
Can you inform me whether any orders have been sent from the War Department to recall the 4th Va Vol Inf back to West Va? Col Dayton informed me that an effort was being made to accomplish that result and as I am absent on leave of absence I am anxious to know the result before I set out to return to the Regiment.

I have the honor to be, Sir
Your Obedient Servant
Geo. L. Woodhull
Chaplain 4th Va V.I.
