October 1
A skirmish was fought near Harpers Ferry.

October 2
The West Virginia State Senate took up a bill for the establishment of a system for free schools.

October 3
The state legislature passed an act providing for the relief of William Nixon, Collector of Revenue for Wayne County.

A mass Union meeting was held in Morgantown.

October 4
The Reverend Alexander Campbell preached at the Disciple's church in Centre Wheeling.

October 5
Confederate supporter Maggie Murphy, who was arrested for attempting to burn a bridge along the Northwestern Virginia Railroad, was sent to Camp Chase prison in Columbus, Ohio.

October 6
Five Confederate prisoners from Braxton County and two deserters were confined in the Atheneum in Wheeling.

October 7
The state legislature passed an act dictating how lands sold for taxes and not redeemed were to be surveyed and conveyed.

Skirmishes were fought at Charles Town and Summit Point.

October 8
The state legislature of West Virginia passed an act altering the boundary between Ritchie and Gilmer counties.

Delegate Ephraim Bee of Doddridge County hosted an oyster supper for friends in the House and Senate at the Sprigg in wheeling.

Daniel Lamb of Wheeling announced he was seeking re-election to the House of Delegates.

Confederate forces attacked a Union detachment at Bulltown in Braxton County, but were compelled to withdraw.

October 14
General Franz Sigel addressed the people of Wheeling at Washington Hall.

A skirmish was fought at Salt Lick Bridge in Braxton County.

October 15
A Union force captured 37 Confederates near Hedgesville.

October 16
The state legislature passed an act allowing merchants' licenses to be transferred.

October 17
The West Virginia state legislature passed an act altering the terms and rules of the First Circuit Court.

October 18
Confederates under General John D. Imboden captured a Union force at Charles Town in Jefferson County.

October 19
The state legislature passed an act providing for the appointment of revenue collectors in counties without a sheriff.

October 20
Five Confederate deserters were released from the Atheneum and sent to Ohio.

October 21
Congressman Jacob Blair addressed a Union meeting at the Ohio County Courthouse in Wheeling.

The state legislature passed an act to appropriate funds for removing sick and wounded soldiers.

Twenty Confederate prisoners captured in the Kanawha Valley were confined in the Atheneum.

A resolution of inquiry on the subject of "declaring the slave families of slaves, who volunteer in the service of the United States, free from involuntary servitude."

Twenty-seven Confederate prisoners were sent from Wheeling to Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio.

October 31
Union citizens of Pleasants County met at the courthouse in St. Marys.

A Senate committee recommended passage of a House bill calling for the admission of Jefferson County into the state of West Virginia.
