ARRIVAL OF VETERAN SOLDIERS
March 3, 1864
Yesterday morning Capt. Powell's Company of cavalry (1st West Virginia Regiment), which has been doing service in the Kanawha Valley for a long time, arrived on the steamer Gaylord.:Notwithstanding the remonstrance's of the Captain the bar-keeper of the boat sold the soldiers as much whisky as they wanted, which was not a little, and the consequence was they created a great disturbance on the craft. They tore down the bar, knocked two or three of the crew into the water, and indulged in other lively demonstrations of disorder. The passengers were greatly alarmed not only for their own safety but for the safety of the boat. Capt. Powell, however, after much difficulty succeeded in resorting order. Most of the members of this company have re-enlisted.
