The Beverly affair occurred better than planned.

The Beverly affair turns out to be much more favorable to the reputation of our troops than at first reported. The attack of Rosser was well timed, being made on one of the most stormy nights of this inclement winter. His force consisted of 500 mounted men. At about 4 o'clock in the morning they succeeded in capturing a picket, and were enabled in the darkness to creep upon the sleeping camp, which of course was at his mercy. The 8th Ohio (formerly the 44th) lost 6 officers and 332 men. The 34th Ohio lost two officers and over 200 men. The story of the dance is fully refuted, and the wellknown [sic]reputation of the veterans of the 44th and 34th O.V.I., will not admit of any supposition that the disaster was occasioned by their negligence or cowardice.
