Navy Aviation Machinist's Mate 2c Gaylord (Gaylerd?) David Adams was born on November 6, 1914, in Marshall County, West Virginia, to David R. and Jeanette Spoontz Adams of Benwood. Gaylord grew up in a family of two sisters (Bernardine [Berdine?] and Lulu) and a brother, Clark. AMM2c Adams was a shipping clerk at the Benwood Works of Wheeling Steel Corporation prior to his enlistment in the Navy on April 17, 1943.
Gaylord, along with eight of his nine crewmates, was killed when his Navy blimp crashed in the Gulf of Mexico near Houma, Louisiana, where he was stationed, on April 19, 1944.
