The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History will present information about cemeteries and the National Register of Historic Places for the Genealogy Club meeting at the Archives and History Library. The discussion will take place from 6 - 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 9. The session is free and the public is invited to attend.
Carolyn Kender, archaeologist, and Sara Prior, education and planning coordinator for the SHPO, will focus on historic preservation programs offered by the SHPO to help preserve West Virginia’s cemeteries. They will explain how their office can help the public determine if a cemetery is historic and if it is eligible to be listed in the National Register. The presentation will include a discussion of the West Virginia Cemetery Survey program and what the public can do to help locate and record information about cemeteries located throughout the state.
Advance registration for the program is not required, but is encouraged. To register in advance, contact Robert Taylor, library manager, at (304) 558-0230, ext. 163, or by e-mail at Bobby.L.Taylor@wv.gov.
