CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Three young artists will represent West Virginia in the 2014 Congressional Art Exhibit at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
Cabinet Secretary Kay Goodwin of the Department of Education and the Arts, Mary Elizabeth Eckerson representing Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, and Charleston artist Amanda Short presented first-place awards Wednesday, March 5, to Allison McIntyre of Lincoln High School, Harrison County; Kaylee Icenhower of Ravenswood High School, Jackson County; and McKayla Meade of Mingo Central High School, Mingo County. The presentation took place in the Great Hall of the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston.
Second place winners include Kayla Davis of Spring Valley High School, Wayne County; Hailey Miller of Ravenswood High School, Jackson County; Brooklynn Lilly of Pikeview High School, Mercer County; Chesney Hudson of Ravenswood High School, Jackson County; and Peyton Dolin of Nitro High School, Kanawha County.
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual-art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submitted entries to the West Virginia State Museum in Charleston, and exhibition juror Amanda Short selected the winning entries. Forty-one students have artwork on display in the Balcony Gallery of the Culture Center. The exhibition will remain on display through April 10 in honor of Youth Art Month, and the district winners will be on display for one year at the U.S. Capitol. A complete list of participants is attached.
Short, a stained-glass artist, conducted a workshop for students prior to the awards presentation at the Culture Center to encourage and inspire young artists to enter the field of glassmaking. Short earned a bachelor of arts degree from West Virginia State University in 2002 and has sold her work to Tamarack and private residents. In 2007 she opened her studio, Amanda’s Art Glass, in Charleston.
