Sept. 10, 2018
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History (WVDACH) presented $547,415 in development grant funds to 20 projects involving the restoration and rehabilitation of historic sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) of the WVDACH administers the development grant program.
“The preservation of our state’s historic resources is so important for West Virginians and their sense of history,” said WVDACH Curator Randall Reid-Smith. “Being able to see, to visit and to live in sites that have historic meaning keeps alive the sense that our heritage is not just something that happened long ago, but is something that we can still appreciate and enjoy.”
A review panel appointed by the SHPO developed recommendations for grant funding for the Archives and History Commission, which made the final grant determinations at its meeting in Pipestem on June 1, 2018. Funding for the grants program comes from the appropriation of funds from the West Virginia Legislature. The department conducted an awards ceremony and orientation on July 31, 2018.
