CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Madison Middle School Team One, with students Jon’C Atkinson, Olivia Cook, Nicole Robinette and Callie Sayre, won the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History’s Region 3 tournament for the 2019 West Virginia History Bowl on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston, Kanawha County. Madison Middle School Team Two, with students Gracie Griggs, Jannah Miller, Maddie Mullins and Jayden Sharps, was the runner-up.
Region 3 is made up of students from Boone, Clay, Kanawha and Putnam counties. Competitors included teams from Andrew Jackson Middle School (one team), Charleston, Kanawha County; Bible Center School (two teams), Charleston, Kanawha County; Clay Middle School (two teams), Clay, Clay County; Elkview Middle School (two teams), Elkview , Kanawha County; George Washington Middle School (one team), Eleanor, Putnam County; Horace Mann Middle School (two teams), Charleston, Kanawha County; Hurricane Middle School (two teams), Hurricane, Putnam County; Madison Middle School (two teams), Madison, Boone County; Poca Middle School (one team), Poca, Putnam County; Sissonville Middle School (one team), Charleston, Kanawha County; and Winfield Middle School (two teams), Winfield, Putnam County.
The West Virginia History Bowl features questions compiled by the staff of Archives and History about the state’s architecture, arts, culture, geography, government, history, people, literature and sports.
The Archives and History staff has developed more than 2,000 questions for its online Quick Quizzes. Teams that are preparing for the History Bowl tournaments may use the Archives and History Daily Trivia and Quick Quizzes as helpful tools from the department’s website, www.wvculture.org/history.
Eighth graders in public, private and homeschool education programs are eligible to compete on the four-person teams in double-elimination tournament play. The regional winners and runner-up teams from each region will then advance to the state tournament, which will take place April 30 at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston.
