CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will celebrate West Virginia’s 156th birthday with festivities on Thursday, June 20, 2019. The Culture Center at the State Capitol Complex in Charleston will offer free family activities and is open to the public at 9 a.m.
Beginning at 9 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Culture Center, 35 special edition West Virginia Day Blenko glass pieces will go on sale for $69 each. These limited-edition pieces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and no phone reservations will be taken. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be youth activities in the Education Room. At 11 a.m., the birthday cake will be cut, and cupcakes will be available in the Great Hall for all guests. An interfaith prayer service will take place in the State Theater beginning at noon. Visitors are encouraged to sign the state’s birthday card to commemorate the day. Guests also can visit the new Miss West Virginia 75th Anniversary exhibit located in the State Theater balcony gallery.
